OMI Gathers for its Annual Assembly 2024 in Tamontaka, Maguindanao

The Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI) of the Philippine province gathered last October 22-23, 2024 at Youth and Family Center in Tamontaka, D.O.S. Maguindanao for their annual assembly.

The assembly was participated by about 80 OMI priests and brothers assigned in the different ministries distributed in different provinces of the Philippines all the way from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

The OMI annual Assembly is an OMI tradition where all OMI priests and brothers gather from all over the Philippines to pray, reflect, and discuss the present situation of the province in terms of its mission and evangelization, financial and human resources, vocation and recruitment among others in consonance to the lens and perspective of the whole congregation.

ON the first day, the Holy Eucharist was celebrated led by Fr. Julito dela Cruz, OMI the Novice Master. After the mass, Fr. Gerry delos Reyes, OMI the provincial Superior of the OMI Philippine province presented the actions taken by the Oblates with the leadership and guidance of the present administration. Fr. Delos Reyes presented as well the efforts of the OMI province in different area of ministries in promoting a more diverse approach in evangelization including the construction of several projects to enhance the mission of the province.

Fr. Dennis Gui, OMI the provincial bursar of the OMI Philippine province also presented the financial status of the province. Fr. Gui admitted that he meticulously reminds the Oblates for their regular monthly reports and their yearly pledges. Fr. Jay Virador, OMI the assistant bursar of the province also shared some insights coming from the letter of the Superior General in terms of financial responsibility that Oblates must be aware of their vow on poverty. In addition, the financial report was also discussed by Ms. Aileen Samson, the OMI Finance Officer. She thanked all the Oblates who continuously support the mission of the province as they share their financial resources regularly.

In the afternoon, the General Treasurer of the congregation presented the over-all financial status of the congregation. He highlighted the seeming problem of lack of vocation in many provinces which causes future challenges to the congregation. Europe, Canada, and United States are financially able but lacking in vocation while most provinces in Asia-Oceania have good vocation but lacking in financial resources. So these will definitely affect the landscape of the congregation in the next 10-15 years. He also highlighted the role of the general administration in handling the finances of the congregation and congratulated the Philippine province for its remarkable efforts in being stable, financially.

On the second day, Fr. Anthony Bochm, OMI, the vicar provincial gave his insights on the role of the central government in line with the different priorities of the congregation all over the world. He emphasized the different situations of every unit or province and invited the oblates to think not only as a province but as a congregation as a whole. This was followed by the Mission committee report of Fr. Romy Saniel, OMI as he presented the various efforts of the province in fulfilling the tasks discussed during the previous years. He presented the priorities of the congregation and will lead the promulgation of the different tools for the implementation of the proposed plans in line with the mission of the congregation.

In the afternoon, IAG’s Atty. Benedicto Bacani and Dr. Francisco “Pancho” Lara presented the years of research conducted specifically in BARMM with the different issues involved and how this coming election will create more challenges especially to Muslims, Christians and the NMIP’s. There were several highlights mentioned but the most common idea which surfaced during the discussion is the challenge on how to create fora or venues of information dissemination so that more and more people will be knowledgeable of the implications of the coming election in BARMM.

The assembly ended with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist which was led by Fr. Denz Basada, OMI, the Sulu-Tawi-Tawi District Superior.
- Fr. Rockmoore Saniel, OMI

Destiny

Sometimes THINGS happen almost repeatedly, one mistake today and tomorrow the same mistake you fall. And unbelievably they happen so fast but you can't track them anytime. Seriously! This is really sick! I always make the same mistake knowing that they are going the same route and end in the same feeling.  My heart once advised that the next time it happen it would be a different game, a different feeling of excitement but sadly I was wrong. I still missed the last spark to make the feeling into reality, making the ending open like a movie always creating another sequel to finally seize the whole picture and story. But, maybe there are things that just won’t work out for some people. Instead there are other things that are just meant for them. Well, I heard this from people, and they call it destiny. Crap! If this is what destiny for me, then holy crap! I just can’t figure out how to move next time. Why can’t I just make the perfect move now? I’m not comparing but some people can ...

Notre Dame of Cagayan: Evangelization Through Education

History The Notre Dame of Cagayan is located in a far distant island called Mapun, Tawi-Tawi. It is one of the Notre Dame schools founded by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in the Sulu and Tawi-Tawi archipelago to respond to the literary education needs of the local people. Among the Notre Dame schools, NDC is one of the farthest if not the most challenging mission area of the oblates particularly with regards to transportation. The Notre Dame of Cagayan was founded by the OMI Fathers in 1958. Fr. Maurice A. Hemann, OMI was its first school principal and director. During that time, the Notre Dame of Cagayan (NDC) was the only high school in the island municipality of Mapun. That is why most of the professionals coming from Mapun are graduates of NDC. The school in its long-standing influence through education has already produced doctors, nurses, teachers, engineers, architects, a lawyer, businessmen, entrepreneurs, a priest, and many others. The Notre Dame of Cagayan is known for...
